Why This Novel
I spent fifty years at the frontier of emerging technology — VR, AR, three-dimensional visualisation — across four continents, including twenty-two years in Western Australia. NEXUS is the argument those fifty years produced, made into a story about a mathematician who inherited mathematics she didn’t know she was inheriting, and what it cost her to use them for what they were always for.
There is a question in this novel I have not resolved to my own satisfaction, and honesty requires naming it. The patch restores the capacity to choose freely. Some restored users choose to return to NEXUS, or to remain connected. I believe the right to leave something freely is the precondition of genuine connection. I am less certain what follows from that belief when people freely choose a connection others would call harmful. The novel doesn’t have a clean answer. Neither do I.
Real-World Background
Château du Clos Lucé
Leonardo da Vinci spent his last three years there and died in the château on 2 May 1519. His documented preoccupation with optics and geometric proportion is the historical foundation the novel’s Clos Lucé sequence rests on.
Voluntary Technology & Exit Rights
The right to leave a technology freely, and what it means when people don’t take the offer, is a live question in platform design and digital ethics.
Perth & the Resources Sector
Observed rather than researched — twenty-two years in Western Australia, watching the bilateral world between Singapore and the resources sector from close range.
Mathematics as Inheritance
The mathematical tradition running from Pacioli through Leonardo is historical. What a mind inherits without choosing it — and what that inheritance costs — is the throughline of the whole series.
In the Catalogue
NEXUS continues the catalogue’s consolable case. Elena Voss can still act on what she finds — but the platform she is fighting is the one she built, praised, and trusted. The sequel to The Reluctant Codex, and the second step in the Leonardo Codex Thrillers, followed by DISCORD.
