On the sandstone escarpment above Alderley Edge in Cheshire, Bronze Age panels contain a warning about a specific kind of catastrophe. The warning has been waiting for someone with the knowledge to read it.

Dr Thomas Hartley, a biogeneticist at the Meridian research campus at Alderley Park, reads the warning correctly. He understands what it describes. He understands what it is asking him not to do. His daughter Emma was murdered in 2018 — her killer identified eleven days late due to a forensic backlog. In those eleven days he killed again. Hartley built Genesis Platform in response. The thing the warning is telling him not to build.

Tommy Fletcher, a 23-year-old National Trust ranger, finds the second set of panels — the ones that explain what the first one was warning against. The error is never in Panel One. The error is in Panel Two, when the list survives.

The Author’s Context

Ken Swayne grew up in Alderley Edge, Cheshire. The escarpment, the copper mines, the sandstone cliffs at dusk — this is not researched landscape. It is the landscape of a childhood. The sleeping knights legend is real, and old, and specific to this place.
